I’m going to be charitable and assume that this is a fools day joke.

A 1940s war photo has left some people claiming it proved time travel is real.

The picture doesn’t appear to seem odd at first – showing a rather busy street in Reykjavik, Iceland, with a smartly dressed man standing on a street corner.

But eagle-eyed history lovers claim the man is holding a mobile phone – a device which only came about 30 years later from the time of the picture.

No it doesn’t. And even if it did, there was no mobile network at that time, so it wouldn’t have workd.

Taken in the capital of Iceland in 1953, the image showed a rather crowded street full of locals and US soldiers during the Second World War.

It would appear that the Mail is not alone in needing editors.

And the mysterious chap has his hand to his ear – and some on social media suspect he may be holding a mobile phone.

Then they aren’t looking closely enough. There is nothing in his hand. What you can see is the collar of the coat the man behind him is wearing.

Idiots.

  1. I’m getting a cloudflare error when I post a comment.

Edit: I did when I posted the first comment, but not this one. Strange.

  2. They trot this garbage out every year for the hard of thinking. The picture has been different but the principle remains the same. So far today I’ve also seen adverts for Dulux rainbow and tartan paints. I think its fun to join in with the tradition but this sort of thing insults intelligence. Last year or maybe the year before, there was a report on an animal rights protest, where one banner read “Stop killing fish for their fingers”. I believe that picture went viral, which only goes to show how low we’ve sunk.

  3. 1953 is clearly a typo, there are a number of other references to 1943 in the story. The story is still bollocks.

  4. This is a pretty feeble effort as far as April 1st stories go. There was a time when they used to come up with really good ones, just plausible enough so that you would start out believing them for a minute or two before catching on. Even the standard of April Fool jokes has gone down the pan.
