Whut?

Biology be damned.

Together we can impact the evolutionary transition of carnivorous species. We are leading research to impact the evolutionary transition of carnivorous species to become herbivorous.

Apparently these morons are serious.

There are certain species that are herbivorous but carnivorans (belonging to the order Carnivora). They have evolved away from carnivory and completely towards herbivory. These include the giant panda, red or lesser panda, bushy-tailed olingo, kinkajou, and spectacled bear. Given that this change has occurred without human agency many times across diverse lineages, it likely will not be too difficult to modify, via selective breeding and genetic engineering, all carnivorous species to evolve herbivorous diets. Thankfully carnivorans generally exhibit a relatively high degree of phenotypic flexibility making these diet switches possible.

Yup, they actually believe this.

  1. This actually makes “nett zero” appear sane.

Followed the link to the “about us” page.

Oh how I’d like to be adrift in an open boat with this lot. Wonder which one I’d go all Lecter on first?

  2. The giant panda is not in fact a herbivore, in the wild they will happily eat a bamboo rat if they manage to catch one, and in captivity will eat meat if provided. In any event, since the Giant Panda is an animal that apparently has an extinction-level death wish it’s not an example I would want to follow!

  3. So all carnivorous species become extinct, replaced by their mutated cousins. Bit of an ethical problem there. Even with artificial selection that’s going to take a long time and carnivory could re-arise through natural selection. And then you have to deal with the flood of herbiviores who no longer have any natural predators and destroy the environment.

Madness. A typical example of a Utopian being willing to ignore ‘the means’ for the lure of some glorious ‘end’.

  4. Why is the countryside not littered with severely disabled or dead animals? All quietly rotting away.
Something is eating them. Tut, tut.
If every beasty from microscopic all the way up to large mammals were strictly vegan, it would be a very stinky, and short lived world.

  5. I’m curious as to how, for example, they’re going to evolve rats away from carnivorousness. Are they going to catch every rat and encourage the evolution towards herbivourousness?
    ‘cos good luck…

Maybe tell them we’ll support their aims wholeheartedly on condition they can prove it with a test animal – tell them to make every rat on the planet herbivores and I’ll support them.

And given that even herbivores will eat meat if given the opportunity, even more good luck.
Plenty of videos on YouTube of cows eating birds or deer eating from a carcass.

    • First you must catch your rat. Rats have developed a highly evolved sense of smell for detecting humans and dogs. It’s why when I put down rat traps, something needed in the semi rural area where I live, I have to make absolutely certain that I have not left any of my scent on the trap or the surrounding area. Also rats are extremely cautious about new things. They will avoid anything in their area that is different suspecting, probably correctly, that there might be a rat trap inside.

Also, what are these biology deniers going to do about omnivorous creatures such as chickens? A chicken will quite happily see a dead companion as extra protein, a phenomenon which can be seen from various American Youtube videos about raising Cornish Cross meat chickens.

Whoever came up with the idea that obligate meat eaters can be converted to herbivores obviously has no idea how nature works.

    • Mostly, though, that’s a desire for missing minerals and other trace elements, rather than a desire for meat.

But I’m reminded of ‘The Simpsons’ sketch about teaching a lion to eat tofu…!

  6. That must be a parody website. Surely. These loons can’t believe that carnivorous animals can be turned into herbivores.

    • It’s damned well impossible to tell in this infantilised, “woke” nightmare.

I can well believe this is genuine. At best (from the adult point of view) this is just another grift sucking at the taxpayers teat and boring us with sanctimonious hypocrisy.

At worse it could potentially do to food supply (and who knows what else) what is currently being done to the power grid.

    • Okay, I’ve dug deeper and there is no evidence that this is a parody. The people check out. They are who they say they are, so I have to assume that this insanity is legit.

  7. But what about the plants feelings? How would they like to have their leaves ripped off and devoured ? Let them develop a world in which nothing needs to be eaten.

  8. With no natural predators the herbivores would just breed out of control and strip the Earth of vegetation completely. Then all these newly minted plant eaters would be left with no choice but to start eating each other. They haven’t really thought this one through have they?
