Yawn

I don’t care. Indeed, I really, really don’t care. And no, it is not stunning and brave, it’s narcissistic posturing.

The Blackpool forward Jake Daniels has become the UK’s first professional male football player to come out as gay since Justin Fashanu in 1990.

Daniels, 17, admitted to having hidden his sexual identity as a young man “because I wanted to be a professional footballer”. Now he says the “time is right to be myself, be free and be confident with it all”.

No one needs to know. I don’t go around telling people about my sexuality because it’s a private matter. It only matters to potential mates. No one else needs or wants to know what you get up to in the privacy of the bedroom.

“Now is the right time to do it,” Daniels told Sky Sports. “I feel like I am ready to tell people my story. I want people to know the real me. I have been thinking for a long time about how I want to do it, when I want to do it. I know now is the time. I am ready to be myself, be free and be confident with it all.

Look at me! Look at Me!

No one wants to hear your story because it really isn’t interesting. You are paid to kick a ball about, so get on and do that, keeping the matter of your sexuality to yourself.

Yup, narcissistic posturing.

More to follow …

Fucking Hell. Really?

  1. Whilst there could be an element of self-aggrandisement and posturing in this announcement, there also could be an element of wanting to come out before they were outed. I wonder if there is a jilted lover or former friends who have expressed a willingness to talk to the Red Tops, lurking in the background to this story?

Being gay and the prospect of gay footballers is no longer the unusual thing that it would have been in Mr Fashnu’s day. Today it’s a bit of a nothingburger.

Personally I’ve always taken the view that if you have 100 of any particular group of men in a room whether it be footballers, accountants, politicians, professional drivers, tradesmen or whatever, then at least five of them, maybe many more, may be into playing the pink oboe either as a permanent orientation or, at least once in their lives, as a temporary diversion or as the result of drinking too many Stellas with their mates. Same sex attraction is now, thankfully, unremarkable on the whole and unless there is something more behind this story, them it deserves a ‘meh’.

  2. His gayness was probably not such a secret, I heard him on the wireless today and in three seconds flat I could tell he was gay. Who ever he is, never heard, don’t care.

  3. Two possible views:
    1. Heading off some obnoxious twat meaning to grab some dosh from a scandal rag for ‘telling all’, or,
    2. Having an opportunity to claim sexual bias if dropped from the team.
Whatever his reason, hope it’s not the latter.

Probably a large part of this since the story was touted a few days ago. The Red Tops being prepared to kill whatever other story was being offered in exchange for an exclusive “Outing” from the footballer himself.

Given that he plays for Blackpool rather than Chelsea he may think there is a chance for a career uplift. Some big club wants to virtue signal their LGBT+ credentials by having him on the team and then sitting on the bench most of the time.

Might make sense financially and professionally, given how few years of football these guys have actually got.

The latter I suspect, he’s only a youth player, its going to make it difficult for the club to not renew his contract, for fear of getting bad publicity. They’ll probably take the view that a few K on his contract is cheaper than having a media storm descend on them if they cut him from the youth team. Its a naked power play, thats all.
