Surprising?

More a case of the blindingly obvious, I’d have thought.

‘It’s extremely eye-opening that people are willing to make decisions about whether or not they would like to get to another human being, in less than a second and based almost solely on the other person’s looks,’ said William Chopik, an associate professor at Michigan State University’s Department of Psychology and one of the two study authors.

Humanity has been doing it for millennia. Why expect it to change now? And they had to do a survey to find this out?

Users were significantly more likely to swipe right on users of their same race, and profiles of users of colour were rejected more often than those of white users.

‘The disparities were rather shocking,’ Chopik said.

‘Profiles of black users were rejected more often than white users, highlighting another way people of colour face bias in everyday life.’

Yeah, had to shoehorn racism into it somewhere.

Hmm, I often find women of other races attractive but I suspect that most people are more attracted to people who are racially similar to themselves. So logically it would seem that if black people are being discrimated against here, it is because other black people prefer white people too. If white people preferred white people and black people preferred black people there wouldn’t be an issue surely.

  2. Well, if this vision of loveliness does not have white guys queueing up to date her, then the only possible explanation is racism.

For myself, I find oriental women unattractive because I think that their faces are expressionless and I find that creepy, plus I am a leg and backside man and they have very boyish figures so that is another offputting characteristic.

Similarly, the wide noses and convex shape of the mouth of people of African descent I again find unattractive – similarly with Pacifica origins.

Makes me an out and out racist, I suppose.

  3. I’ve just discovered my new sexuality. Super Straight. Oh look, it’s Census time! How convenient.

  4. People look for people who look like a younger version of their parents.
Otherwise everybody would be trying to mate with the stereotype good looker.
    For a fling different rules.
    Beer helps.

  5. This is a non story. Nothing to do with racism at all. People make judgements on looks all the time and it doesn’t have to mean that that this judgement is based on race. I find some Black women attractive and some not,I find some White women attractive and some not, I find some mixed race women attractive and some not. About the only attribute that a woman may have which would override other attractiveness or non-attractiveness factors is ginger hair, I love that on a woman. However no matter what you may find superficially attractive about a person all that is often overridden by other factors such as are they a nice person or could I see this person bearing my children and are they going to be OK to live with? This is why my wife although not possessing ginger hair is why she’s my wife, the practical and other factors were more important things than the one thing that I would in other circumstances say ‘yes’ to every time.

  6. My usual selection criteria are ‘warm’ and ‘breathing’ – why limit the field any further?
