The Square Root of Bugger All

Double masking is a waste of time according to “research”.

Double-masking is only slightly better at stopping the spread of coronavirus than wearing one face covering, a study has suggested.

Japanese researchers said wearing one surgical mask that is fitted correctly could stop up to 85 per cent of viral particles from passing through.

Doubling up on surgical masks offers no benefit because air resistance builds up and causes leakage around the edges of the mask, they claimed.

The study found there was some benefit in wearing a tight-fitting reusable mask on top of a surgical one, but it was marginal, offering up to 89 per cent protection.

That we are even having this stupid conversation demonstrates just how far down the rabbit hole we have gone. And, how come this research contradicts all the other studies that have gone before? The ones that have failed to find any evidence for masks begin effective?

The experts, who used a super-computer simulation to test different face covering combinations, said ‘the performance of double masking simply does not add up’.

So, not research and not a study, just a computer game. Is that a dormouse in that teapot I see?

Their findings contradict recent recommendations from health experts in the UK and US, who have claimed it’s ‘common sense’ two masks are better than one.

Common sense is long dead and buried. I attended the funeral. Looks like science has just keeled over and expired as well. Oh, well, another wake to attend.

  1. Models, computers, GIGO

Virus 0.125 micron, N99 mask blocks 99% of particles >0.300 microns. Does a football net stop tennis balls?

Remember when Virgin entered F1? They were to be inexpensive and ‘green’ – no wind tunnels, only computer CFD modelling. Didn’t work, soon scrambling around trying to hire a wind tunnel

Lesson learned? Nope, keep repeating failure like Prof Ferguson

  2. Just waiting for some ‘expert’ to suggest that putting a piece of Clingfilm in between the two masks will stop 100% of the virus. Don’t laugh. It’s bound to happen.

  3. “…it’s ‘common sense’ two masks are better than one.”

And three are better than two, and four are better than… ad infinitum.

It’s common sense that two aspirins are better than one, that three are better than two, that four are better than… etc*

    * Don’t try this at home. 😉

  4. How about a plastic bag over the head held on with a zip tie around the neck? That would be 100% effective, come on snowflakes you know you want to.
