The Definition of Insanity

Einstein’s definition of insanity was to do the same thing over and over in the hope of a different outcome.

The prime minister is considering a month-long lockdown across England in the hope that measures could be eased before Christmas.

A new “stay at home” order could be announced on Monday, with schools, colleges and universities exempt.

Documents seen by the BBC suggest the UK is on course for a much higher death toll than during the first wave unless further restrictions are introduced.

Deaths could reach more than 4,000 a day, one of the models suggests.

Déjà Vu anyone? That “could” is doing some serious heavy lifting there. Bear in mind the models come from the same discredited source that has got it wrong repeatedly in the past. Computer modelling is not science, it is woo, witchcraft, shamanism, guesswork. Nothing more. Yet a combination of scary headlines and scary models is leading these idiotic politicians by the nose into yet another economically disastrous lock-down.

We know from worldwide statistics that lock-downs made no difference to the passage of the virus earlier in the year. We also know from the data that the vast majority survive perfectly well – and the data only includes hospitalisations, so the death rate is lower that that stated. We also know, if we can be bothered to do the research, that this year’s winter death toll wasn’t particularly out of the way. Winter happens. Flu type viruses thrive in the winter months. People die. Those at the end o their lives or with co-morbidities tend to succumb to such viruses. There is absolutely nothing extraordinary here – only the hysterical response from the media and governments.

Those screeching headlines with bald figures without context combined with sob stories about outliers have managed to persuade governments and supine populations with no grasp of basic fact checking or understanding of the basics of scientific process that we are facing a killer pandemic on the scale of the medieval black death.

Indeed, watching the way that people are behaving, medieval is an accurate descriptor, for this is much like the Catholic church pre-enlightenment looking to God for answers or prior to that the pagan belief in magic charms to keep evil spirits at bay.

Yet these cretins keep telling us that they are “following the science.”

No, they are not.

  1. I will not be put into lockdown. Enough is enough. Guess for the first time in my life (68 years old) i’ll be breaking the law. Perhaps i’ll end up in prison. I thought we elected a Tory government not one dedicated to trashing the economy.

  2. What’s so utterly galling this time is that the political ‘optics’ of this are so nakedly transparent to everyone. You can so easily picture the SAGE zealots leaning in to Boris and whispering “This is the only way to save Christmas” into his ear like Iago to Othello. And that’s surely what he’s really worried about – going down to posterity as the Man Who Shut Down Christmas. The Luftwaffe didn’t manage it, the strife of the 1970s didn’t manage it (even with Ted Heath’s warning about the “the hardest Christmas we have known since the War”), and Boris is freaked at the prospect going into the history books as the Grinch. So, it’s back into lockdown we go.

You wanted power Boris, well now you’ve got it, and all it’s done is to show just how far away from being up to the task of wielding it you really are. You abject coward.

Still, the hospitality sector must be really looking forward to it, they’ve had such a terrific bumper year they’ll be glad of the chance to sit back and enjoy a nice rest.

  3. It would be so good if the government declared another lockdown and the whole country stood up and said screw you we’re not doing it. I can dream can’t I.

  4. Just heard the UK cops who were threatening to kick down doors on Christmas day have backed down. They won’t be enforcing ‘minor infringements’ apparently. Wonder if there was a threat of mutiny in the ranks?

  5. “…the data only includes hospitalisations, so the death rate is lower that that stated. “

Does anyone know any undertakers? I’m wondering why the airwaves aren’t flooded with them demanding more morgue space be built because they are running out of room…

    • I do, as it happens. They’ve been busy during the usual times and they were stretched during April, but not beyond capacity. Now is going to be busy for them as it is every winter.

      • If only they could all introduce their services to the Palace of Westminster – and should any of the inhabitants claim to be extant, take no notice as we all know what lying b’stards they are
