Identity Cards, Big Blunkett and the Surveillance Society

Following the Queen’s Speech last year, Big Blunkett is ploughing ahead with his plans for a national identity card – and, perhaps more disturbing, an all encompassing database. Do you really want to have to notify the government every time you change address? Do you really want government agencies to have ready cross referencing to whatever data they choose to keep on you?

Do you really trust the buggers to manage it effectively?

Do you trust them to manage the costs? These are the same buffoons who "managed" the passport fiasco?

So how do you fancy living in a country where any petty offical with a uniform can demand to see your papers?

And will it have any effect on crime, terrorism and illegal immigration?

Will it buggery – terrorists will do as they do now and move freely among us using their own identity; unknown to the authorities until they perpertrate their outrages. Criminals will have a field day forging cards and people traffickers will sell them to their hapless victims.

Did ID cards stop the Madrid bombings?

ID cards are a solution looking for a problem and are the stock proposal for all sorts of security issues by the hard of thinking.

Now is the time to start protesting – write to your MP. Keep informed by registering with the various internet groups and info lists that are starting to appear. I’ll be posting links here in the next few days and weeks.

Remember: a society that is prepared to trade a little freedom for greater security deserves neither (with apologies to Thomas Jefferson)
