The People’s Vote

Well, the people voted. Looks like “leave” won. Again.

What is interesting is that Theresa May has managed to cement her legacy as being the arbitrator of a Tory wipe-out. Well done. The other thing is the manner in which a movement was mobilised and took the lead so successfully. And it’s worth noting that in my region, the Brexit Party——a new party, barely months old——took nearly twice as many votes as the nearest competitor: the very illiberal anti-democrats.

There is a place for a new movement in our political system——one preferably not from the centre. Sure, Farage managed to pull together some veterans of Westminster politics, but the movement as a whole is not driven by Westminster and is very much outside it. He has also tapped into a discontent among the electorate——discontent with Westminster politics, a political élite that is out of touch and self-serving. Then there will be the delight as the awkward squad descend on Brussels. That’s going to be fun.

We live in interesting times.

Update: Marine Le Pen has done to Macron what Farage did to May.

  1. I think we need another European election because A-the people didn’t know what they were voting for- B the Russians hacked it- C old people have died since the election yesterday- D young people that turned 18 today couldn’t vote- E you’re all plebs and shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

Perm any four from five and you’ve got a BBC headline.

    • Regarding excuse ‘C’ – surely some who were young in 2016 are now old and thus will have changed from remain to leave, thus evening up the loss of leavers through natural wastage.

  2. I look forward with much relish to watching Farage and Widders kicking arses in the EU parliament. No doubt Farage will goad them to within an inch of their lives – and bloody right too! The Brexit Party is now the largest single party in the EU Parliament – after only 6 weeks. Quite phenomenal.

  3. How many times do we need to tell the government what we want before they listen. After all we vote them in to do a job , then they procrastinate so much they keep putting it off in the hope we will either forget what we asked them to do or change our minds.
Harry Enfield’s Kevin springs to mind, we are the parents and Kevin is the government!
