So What?

The Grauniad engages in rank hypocrisy again.

The domination of Facebook by Italy’s two populist political leaders, Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio, is revealed in previously unseen data that shows how they exploited video and live broadcasts to bypass the mainstream media and foment discord during the country’s general election.

So? Given that the mainstream media is in cahoots with the establishment and labels everyone who doesn’t agree with them as “far right” and insults or ignores the ordinary white working class, bypassing them seems a jolly good idea. Indeed, the sooner the mainstream media disappears up it own fundament, the better, frankly, for they are a stain on our democracy.

But, but, but, using Facebook and Twitter was a good thing when activists were using it during the Arab Spring. Now that “populists” are using it, it is a bad thing. Populism is merely a democratic outcome that the mainstream media don’t approve of.

The data, reviewed by the Guardian, reveals how the leaders massively expanded their reach with inflammatory and visually arresting posts earlier this year, eclipsing their main rival, the centre-left former prime ministerMatteo Renzi, on Facebook.

Whereas the mainstream media is whiter than the driven snow – never misleads, never inflames…. Yadda, yadda, yadda. They have been played at their own game and lost. Why should we care? Oh, that’s right, I don’t.

  1. The basic argument here is this: “People I don’t like have managed to get their ideas to the voters, despite the best efforts of people like me to stop them using the traditional media, and I don’t like it!”

  2. But, but, but, using Facebook and Twitter was a good thing when Obama (Facebook boasted about how they helped Obama by leaking data) was using it during the 2008 and 2012 USA Election. Now that “populists” like Trump, Farage and JRM are using it, it is a bad thing. Populism is merely a democratic outcome that the Establishment/Swamp & mainstream media don’t approve of.

  4. The mantra of “don’t believe all you read in the papers” is more true today with fake news than ever before. So I don’t. We know the MSM is biased. Re the Graun and the Telegraph as two examples then the BBC and the FT compared to the Express. All grinding their own axe.

    • You’re behind times. No longer The Groan vs Tel. It’s now Guardian and Guardegraph vs GuardyMail and ExpressyMirror

      I recommend Spectator and Spiked-Online
