Er…

Spending a night in Fred West’s cell is tasteless, apparently.

The organisers of a Halloween charity event billed as a chance to spend a night in a police cell once occupied by the serial killer Fred West have been criticised for glorifying a notorious murderer.

Well, duh! Jack the Ripper tours anyone?

However, the tone of the advert and event attracted criticism.

Well, of course. It wouldn’t be 21st Century Britain if someone, somewhere, wasn’t having a righteous fit of the vapours over it.

Luciano Pollichieni, a researcher at the centre for conflict security and terrorism at the University of Nottingham, called for the event to be cancelled. He said: “It is disrespectful and futile. In the context in which the population is increasingly sceptical about police work and crime and criminals increasingly fascinate the youth what kind of message will it send?”

What message do you think it will send? It’s a Halloween do, Jeebus! Of course it was tasteless, but that’s the whole point. Halloween is a feast of tastelessness. Get over yourselves.

“On reflection, the organiser of the event has agreed that using his name was insensitive and has therefore removed it from any advertising of this event.”

Sigh. Another nail in the coffin of facetiousness and the spirit of dark British humour.

  1. I mean ol’ Vlad the Impaler was a model king, socially fully aware and who celebrated diversity, positively discriminated, frequently giving Muslims in his kingdom the highest positions in the land. Infact he even succeeded in reducing the crime rate to zero and that without fascist things like ‘profiling’ and ‘stop and search’.

So its ok to wear that Dracula costume (as long as it wasn’t sewn in some Indian sweat shop by child labour of course).

Like the popular – but derided by “establishment” – Carry On films, Fawlty Towers etc.

Edinburgh Dungeon, Burke & Hare pub & tours next?

Only “establishment” approved recreation allowed – wasn’t Cromwell ousted?

  3. “Luciano Pollichieni, a researcher at the centre for conflict security and terrorism at the University of Nottingham”. Can we export Notts Uni back to Italy next April?

  4. Given the police have done everything in their power to build this petard, I’m happy to see them blown to smithereens on it. More popcorn, anyone?

    • I really feel that I’ve woken up into a dream world which is a joint production between Kafka and Dali. Could this be true?
