Rising inequality is a national scandal that should be addressed by a voluntary top-up tax system and a crackdown on “sinful” tax avoiders, the archbishop of York has said.
People who are willing to pay more tax towards health, education and social care should be able to do so through voluntary, hypothecated payments, John Sentamu told the Guardian.
They can. Any time they want. All they have to do is send a cheque to HMRC. This has always been the case and Sentamu is a twat. And there is nothing sinful about tax avoidance. I intend to continue to do it in the most aggressive manner that I can.
“Income inequality is the cause of all our trouble. Inequality leads to huge social problems,” he said.
Bollocks on stilts. The alternative is communism and that is evil beyond words. The dustman is not worth the same income as the brain surgeon. Sentamu is a twat.
“If citizens are willing to pay more, there needs to be a mechanism to do so. I call it top-up,” said Sentamu.
If you had done even five seconds worth of research you would know that such a mechanism exists and has done all along. I for one will not give the state one penny more than I absolutely have to.
The inability of Guardian readers to distinguish between ‘tax avoidance’ and ‘tax evasion’ is almost as great as that of Daily Mail readers who can’t understand the difference between ‘Supremacy’ and ‘Primacy’.
Or DM journalists who can’t understand the difference between plastic waste and litter despite Daily Mail readers trying to educate them in comments.
It’s no wonder Sentamu is so wide of the mark on his facts. His day job consists of trying to persuade people to believe in God, a non-existant sentient being whose very existance is only “proven” by the writings of other God-botherers like him.
Then you should easily prove that ‘God’ doers not exist.
I’d rather this didn’t become one of those tedious arguments about the existence or otherwise of God.
The phrase “Jesus loves you” can bring comfort to a troubled soul.
Although not, I fear, if heard in a Mexican prison.
Wow, did you ever get the description of his day job wrong.
His day job consists entirely and utterly of trying to persuade people to give him money.
I think it’s everyone’s duty to pay as little tax as possible. have you seen what they do with it??
Yes. Hence my abhorrence at paying it.
Thats rich (ha ha) coming from a man who is part of an organisation that has investments to the tune of £7bn. How about handing that little lot over to reduce a bit of ‘inequality’ then Bish?
Incidentally I keep banging on that the Tories should implement a voluntary parallel tax system that those who wish to signal their virtue could sign up to. It would be the ultimate case of ‘put your money where your mouth is’ to all those demanding higher taxes all the time.
Sentamu also pointed to a 2017 British Social Attitudes survey, which found 48% of respondents favoured higher taxes to pay for more spending on health, education and social benefits. Only 4% said they wanted taxes to be cut, and 44% said tax rates should stay the same.
“If citizens are willing to pay more, there needs to be a mechanism to do so. I call it top-up,” said Sentamu.
Idiot, the 48% don’t want to pay more taxes themselves, they want others to pay more tax. Sentamu needs a scheme where people can walk up to ‘rich bastards’ climbing out of Bentleys and Aston Martins and force them to pay more tax. But there already is such a scheme, the Labour Party.
The amount voluntarily sent to HM Treasury through gifts and bequests between 2002-2011 was as follows:
Year Total
2002/2003 £45,664.67
2003/2004 £3,100.00
2004/2005 £97,495.13
2005/2006 £5.00
2006/2007 £107,346.13
2007/2008 £1,700.00
2008/2009 £429,352.38
2009/2010 £256.46
2010/2011 £971,074.98

2005/2006 demands a song from Frankie….It was a very good year.
Jesus said ‘render’ (not voluntary, not a gift) and ‘that which is his’ (ie what he demands) -Jesus didn’t say anything about chucking handfuls of extra shekels towards Rome.
Quite. Which is why I minimise my exposure to tax wherever possible.
Dear Mr Longrider
There are many hundreds of thousands of people, possibly millions, who pay more for health and education. They pay directly to hospitals and schools, and cut out the state completely.
For some reason these people are vilified by socialists, despite paying a second time for health and education, having already paid taxes for state supplied services which they are not taking, leaving more ‘health’ and more ‘education’ for those enjoying the state provision.
Weird.
