The Politics of Envy

The Guardian, where else?

Ian Jack is arguing for Maoist communism, where the state is all and we, the little people, are mere chattels of the state and may not own our property; merely lease it temporarily from the all-powerful, all benevolent state – the state is mother, the state is father – to whom it must return upon our demise to be redistributed to ensure “equality”.

What we see here is pure spite and envy aimed that those people who work hard, save for their retirement and then pass on their estate to their children. This is unearned wealth and it is therefore wrong and creates inequality. Well, here’s the thing; we are unequal. Some are more capable than others. Some will earn more than others. This is a good thing as it gives an impetus to improve one’s lot – or the lot of those who follow. It encourages endeavour, to improve, to rise above the lot one was handed at birth. Inequality is the natural state of things. There is nothing wrong with it.

Below the line of this risible, misanthropic and spiteful piece of rhetoric, we see the usual seething mass of resentment and hatred of anyone who dares to argue that, actually, what we earn we should keep and dispose of as we see fit. This is selfish. Well, yes, selfishness is the key to survival. And, frankly, it is my right to give what I have to whoever I choose – not to have it sequestered by an avaricious state to piss away on various fake charities and other third sector parasites. That is why we have wills.

In other words, we are re-entering the world of the Victorian novel, in which suitable marriages, contested wills and misplaced legacies drive the plot, while the poor – the people without lawyers – press their faces against the window of this vigorous, scheming world and merely invite our sympathy.

This is the kind of risible histrionic bullshit that passes for argument in the pages of the Grauniad. Much like the moronic claptrap about voting Conservative means killing disabled people. Jesus H Christ on a pogo stick!

These people really are pure evil. I do not belong the state. I do not serve the state. The state is not my friend; it is my enemy and I will do all that I can to keep as much of my property out of its greedy clutches. I despise the state with every fibre of my being. And Ian Jack can shove his communism where the sun don’t shine.

  1. It’s almost like the state is God to these people. Their religion. They need to believe in something infallible. Which it will never be as their precious state is made of imperfect humans.

  2. “Ian Jack can shove his communism where the sun don’t shine.”

As communism dropped from the place where the sun don’t shine, it follows the foul ideology should return there.

  3. How can anyone not know that Communism is a shit idea that always results in abject poverty for everyone but the party elites? How can anybody be so unworldly as to not know this?

    • They would argue that true communism has never been applied, their “pure” form of communism will work. It is impossible to penetrate their delusion with rational arguments.
