Oh, Please!

Seriously?

A Tory councillor campaigner is calling on parliament to make supporting EU membership a criminal offence under treason laws.

The petition ‘Amend the Treason Felony Act to make supporting UK membership of the EU a crime’ has been launched by Christian Holliday, a Vote Leave co-ordinator for Guildford and a Conservative Councillor. Posted on the parliamentary petition website, it calls on Westminster to ensure: “the Treason Felony Act be amended to include the following offences.

Okay, so the moaning remainers piss me off, too, but this is just being silly. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? When people keep going on and on and on about how awful it is that we are leaving; counter their whining with arguments, don’t try to use the law to silence them. That is merely playing their game, for they would use whatever comes to hand to undermine a democratic vote.

Mr Holliday explains: “It is becoming clear that many politicians and others are unwilling to accept the democratic decision of the British people to leave the EU. Brexit must not be put at risk in the years and decades ahead.”

Indeed. However, using the dead hand of the state to silence them does more harm than good – and it makes you come across as a nasty little fascist, which, frankly, you are.

  1. I think this has got more to do with Clegg’s admission that he and others are doing all they can to delay Brexit, and even better from their point of view stop it altogether, than anything else. if people want to bitch about Brexit, then fine, I couldn’t care less. That is not the case here mate and I think you are being just a tad disingenuous to suggest that it’s Freedom of Speech matter. The petition is about those who support EU membership, should be charged with a felony under the Treason Act, to whit, one Clegg. The actual wording of the petition is:-

    “The Treason Felony Act be amended to include the following offences:
    ‘To imagine, devise, promote, work, or encourage others, to support UK becoming a member of the European Union;
    – To conspire with foreign powers to make the UK, or part of the UK, become a member of the EU”

    Nowhere in there does in restrict the freedom of speech.
    Odd, it is not that scumbags like Clegg and Millitwat now choose to bang on about Parliamentary sovereignty when they’ve been quite happy to accept every EU ruling and directive that has overidden Parliament, without any scrutiny for God only know how many decades.

    • Er, yes, it does restrict freedom of speech. To campaign for membership of the EU is not and is nowhere close to being treasonous.

      To imagine, devise, promote, work, or encourage others, to support UK becoming a member of the European Union;
      – To conspire with foreign powers to make the UK, or part of the UK, become a member of the EU”

      Fucking hellski! Seriously, that is part of an active debate about the future of the country and they have every right to their opinion and to campaign for their opinion to be heard. What they have no right doing is overturning a democratic vote. For that, they deserve to lose their seats in the house.

      I am appalled by Miliband and Clegg, but it ain’t treason and the treason laws have no place here.

    More proof, if it were needed by now, that scratch a modern Tory, find a progressive…
