The Second Word is “Off”.

HMRC deciding to tick someone off for tax avoidance.

The letter, apparently has no force in law.  Well, of course not. Tax avoidance is perfectly legal.  As the folks at HMRC damned well know, tax avoidance is not the same thing as tax evasion. It is time they stopped politicking and accepted the fact that some of us manage our affairs to minimise our exposure to tax. This is not only legal, it is sensible and pragmatic. It is what everyone should be doing  – the more aggressive, the better.

However, there are many forms of tax avoidance which are perfectly legal and acceptable to the authorities. Avoidance is distinct from tax evasion, which is illegal.

Precisely. If it is a dodgy scheme, then it is illegal. If they cannot demonstrate that it is illegal, then fuck off.

A source suggested that the letter in question was unlikely to be used again, having been the subject of media reports.

Well, no. No one in their right mind would have signed it and now HMRC’s stupidity is exposed for all to see.

  1. Psychological warfare is intended to act upon the brain and the thought processes. Both our ruling élite and HMRC lack the former and are incapable of the latter.

  2. Maybe we should start sending letters to HMRC pointing out the things that we do not want them to spend our money on. Kid’s company for example. Maybe we should start sending letters to HMRC pointing out the things that we would like them to spend our money on. Maintaining the roads for example.
