Oh, What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Assuming the illegal immigrants get past the Gendarmerie at Calais and through the tunnel, our delightful government has now decided that it will crack down on housing…

A  criminal offence for landlords and agents who do not carry out the “right to rent” test or remove illegal immigrants will be included in the Immigration Bill which will be debated in Parliament this autumn. Repeat offenders could be fined, jailed for five years and have rent payments confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The new  law, which will apply in England only, will enable landlords to evict illegal immigrants more quickly. Tenancies could be ended immediately when a person’s leave to remain in the country expires – in some cases without a court order.

So, a bit like the anti-smoking legislation, ordinary people are expected to become officers of the state and police a law for it, on pain of prosecution. Never mind the consequences of turning people out onto the streets, adding to the homelessness burden and crime. At the very least a roof over their heads while the process of dealing with any claims for residence is being dealt with is a basic humanitarian approach. And if you get a bunch of SJW squatters in, you have a lengthy court battle to get the bastards out, but a family of immigrants who are paying their rent can be kicked out just like that. Wow! Due process, what’s that?

But, get this…

Greg Clark, the Communities Secretary, said: “We are determined to crack down on rogue landlords who make money out of illegal immigration – exploiting vulnerable people and undermining our immigration system.

Greg Clark is suffering cognitive dissonance. At least the unscrupulous landlords are providing shelter for those “vulnerable people”. Because kicking them out on the streets is such a good idea and so considerate of the vulnerable.

Then there’s another consequence. I’ve experienced it recently when staying in seedy hotels in London (don’t ask). Every one of them wants to “see ID”. Presumably because of the problem of giving illegals shelter; and cheap hotels in North London is a likely place they might want to stay, the hoteliers want to cover their own arses (and who can blame them?). However, what we have is ID cards by the back door.

What a horrible place this country is becoming.

  1. “…What a horrible place this country is becoming…”

    Merely reflecting its ‘ruling class’.

  2. More appeasing of the UKIP-voting classes. There seems to be no end to the illiberal crap that can be implemented should the excuse be to clamp down on illegal immigration. For many years, lorry drivers have been prosecuted if they fail to detect a stowaway on board
