I’m Still Not Going

There are those who were saying on the news that not going to Tunisia gives  the terrorists a victory. Maybe so, but I fail to see why deliberately putting oneself in the line of fire for a pyrrhic victory is a wise move. Nor do I feel any particular loyalty to the Tunisian tourism industry. It is up to them to sort out the viper in their midst, not us.

A provocative advertising campaign featuring images of terror attacks in Western capitals urges tourists not to abandon Tunisia in the wake of its own terror attack.

The campaign, launched by a Tunisian communications firm, asks “would you stop visiting” alongside images of London during the 7/7 bombings, New York during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Centre and a placard signifying the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris.

A caption reads “Support Tunisia, land of peace”.

I went to Tunisia in 2001. Sousse, as a matter of fact and a very pleasant week it was. However, the Middle East is a cauldron at the moment. The likelihood of Islamist nutters going on the rampage is somewhat higher than it is in New York, London  or Paris. Given this, I will not be travelling there any time soon. The whole of the Middle East is off my list of desirable destinations – which is why when I am asked (yet again) if I want to work in Saudi, the UAE or some other shit-hole on their rail project, my response is always negative. It will continue to be so.

So, yeah, I will stop visiting Tunisia, thanks all  the same.

Not only that, but in London, New York, Paris etc. you could pass for a native (until you open your mouth). In Tunisia the nutters just have to look at you to see that you are a target.

    • In London, new York and Paris all natives are targets. I don’t understand your point.
