Absolutely

Cut public spending.

The study also suggested that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport could be effectively scrapped, and its functions transferred elsewhere, at a saving to the taxpayers £1,063,696,000.

Yes, indeed. I’ve said this for a while, now. That should only be the start. There are whole swathes of government that could – and should – go.

“Culture, media and sport existed in Britain long before we had a department for them,” the alliance said.

Of course and will continue long after we slice this white elephant out of our lives. Much like the flood plains of Somerset, government is a part of the problem, not the solution.

On the matter of HS2, I am inclined to agree – I would be spending money on upgrading existing infrastructure and I would suggest an alternative route into Devon and Cornwall might not be a bad idea… However:

The government should be positioning us for the future. What we will see for the next decade is driverless cars. How are we preparing for that?

Sometimes, even the most enlightened don’t get it. The answer is “nothing”, for it is not something that the government should be involved with (and certainly not my fucking tax money). If this abomination ever becomes a reality, we will have to deal with it, but if the state becomes involved, it will be much worse than if not.

Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, meanwhile, will set out the key priorities for the Liberal Democrats in a speech at the Mansion House in London tomorrow (Monday). He is expected to confirm his commitment to a new “mansion tax” on expensive homes…

Same old, same old.

  1. No DCMS should not be closed down and it’s functions transferred elsewhere. It should be shut down.

  2. The first minister for this job creation scheme was Chris Smith (hello, I am homosexual). He apparently said that it should be called Department for Sports, Culture and Media, or SCAM for short. He knew, we know. So just how entrenched are they that their disappearance would be a tragedy?

    • Why am I not surprised!

Met Chris Smith at a charity do about 10 years ago, couldn’t see the point of him then. (Should I rephrase that?)

  3. Along with the guvmint spending cuts along the Somerset Levels, I assume?
    /snark

A lot of the problem is that the monies are spent badly …..
