They Do

Parents who earn a combined income of more than £80,000 should have to pay if their children go to the most popular state schools, a report suggests.

Dr Anthony Seldon, headmaster at the private Wellington College, raises the idea in a report for cross-party think tank the Social Market Foundation,

He said it would break “the middle-class stranglehold on top state schools” and provide additional funds.

Really?

And what does Dr Seldon think that progressive taxation actually does? Oh, yeah, it means that the more wealthy you are, the more taxes you pay – so those folk are already paying more for the same services, but he would like to sting them even more.

The best thing to do with think tanks is to shut them down.

Edited to add: I would also point out that as a taxpayer, I am paying for these schools and I don’t have children, so the whole argument is bollocks.

Surely the most likely effect is the precise opposite. What he is effectively proposing are fee payer schools at taxpayers expense. Is he expecting middle class parents being stung by an extra bill for their offspring to attend a good school, to send them to a rubbish school instead to save money? In any case, why should anyone be forced to pay again for something that their taxes have already paid for?

Yes, this. Precisely this. What planet is Seldon living on? He is supposed to be an educated man.

  2. Shut them down? I think something a little more permanent is called for: possibly involving locked doors, hand-grenades & a flamethrower…
