Work

Mrs L started a new job yesterday. It’s low paid compared to what she is used to and it is not making use of her IT skills. It does, however, get her off Jobseeker’s. I am starting a part time role with Sainsburys this evening. I cannot say that stacking shelves was where I saw my career going, but being part time, it allows me to pursue my consultancy work while providing a safety net that is more than JSA can provide. Besides, it satisfies the underlying desire to be independent of the state handouts –  to provide for ourselves.

It’s a start.

  1. At a cross roads myself. Old business just outside the knackers yard waiting for the gate to open and new one just an idea for now so I too was considering exchanging time for money all shelf stacking and coming ‘off benefit’ but I’ve realised a couple of things.
    Annual living costs circa £12K
Combined tax free income courtesy of HMRC for the mem sahib and myself circa £14.5K
WFTC running at £84 a week

So we can legally ‘earn’ £14000 minimum and not pay a penny in income tax and still be 2k a year ‘better off’ than we are today.
Even better the £84 a week WFTC covers the Council tax of £104 a month and pays the rump of our mortgage.

    What’s not to like?

    PS
I do not always get paid for work with money. Silver, gold and ‘commodities and services’ are untraceable!!

  2. Good luck to both of you.

Had my fair share of that kind of work – door to door carpet cleaning was the worst!

Always remember that it’s only temporary and the day goes a bit quicker.
