And So It Starts…

In the wake of the 10:10 video clusterfuck, Sony, one of 10:10’s sponsors has decided that enough is enough.

As a result we have taken the decision to disassociate ourselves from 10:10 at this time.

And 350.org follow suit:

Upon seeing the video, however, we have informed 10:10 that we can no longer remain partners on 10/10/10 or any other initiative.

Oh dear… Couldn’t happen to a better bunch.

Update: As I’m a customer of O2 I’ve been corresponding with them on the matter given that they are one of the listed sponsors. More in the comments below.

  1. Reading that over my tea and toast this morning has put a smile on my face. I hope the sociopaths behind the video were frowning over their water and dandelion leaves at the same time.

  2. This is the reply I got….

Thank you for your email concerning the video released by the 10:10 climate change campaign group. Sony has supported the 10:10 climate change campaign because we share its objective to reduce carbon emissions. However, we strongly condemn the “No Pressure” video, which was conceived, produced and released by 10:10 entirely without the knowledge or involvement of Sony.

The company considers the video to be ill-conceived and tasteless. We also believe this video risks undermining the work of the many thousands of members of the public, schools and universities, local authorities and many businesses, of which Sony is one, who support the long-term aims of the 10:10 movement and who are actively working towards the reduction of carbon emissions.

As a result we have taken the decision to disassociate ourselves from 10:10 at this time.

    Yours sincerely,

  3. O2 are the one to go for. I’ve seen a comment somewhere that they claimed they are not a 1010 sponsor. The enquirer suggested they visit the 1010 website to inform 1010 of that.

  4. Okay, email sent:

    Dear sirs,

In the wake of the 10:10 video that was briefly released and withdrawn, I note the O2 is listed as a sponsor of this organisation. Other sponsors are now, wisely, withdrawing their support.

I am currently an O2 subscriber and have been since I first took out a mobile contract under what was then BT Mobile. I am, however, unwilling to continue in a business relationship with an organisation that allies itself to a campaign group that behaves in the way that 10:10 has done, as I have no wish for any of my money to support such behaviour.

I am curious, therefore, to know how O2 plans to respond to its relationship with 10:10, following its appalling and unethical behaviour.

I await your response with interest.

    Yours faithfully,

    Longrider

    Let’s see what happens.

  5. That was quick:

    Hi Longrider

I’m sorry that you’re not happy with the environmental campaign’s video 10:10.

Please accept my apologies about this as we weren’t aware about the content of the video. We also weren’t consulted when this video was made and published. You can find the apology statement by clicking the link

Hope you understand the situation. If there?s anything else I can do for you, please email me or contact our online help centre on the link

    My reply:

Many thanks for your prompt response. I have read 10:10’s apology. My core question, though, remains unanswered; what is O2 going to do about its relationship with 10:10? Given their behaviour, I want to have no relationship with them, even peripherally via my use of a sponsoring organisation, such as O2. If necessary, I’ll change my provider to ensure this.

    Regards,

    This could get interesting…

  6. I’m also a customer of O2 so I’ve sent them one to:

    Dear sirs,

With regards to the 10:10 video that was released, then withdrawn after public protest, I note that O2 is listed as a sponsor.

Sony and 350.org, also sponsors, have just disassociated themselves from 10:10 and condemned the video.

As an O2 subscriber, along with my family, we would like to know if you plan on doing the same. We would be unable to continue a relationship with a company who would sponsor such activities, and would consider moving to a new provider at our earliest opportunity if your intent is not to distance yourselves from 10:10, following its appalling and unethical behaviour.

I await your response with interest.

    Yours faithfully,

    Bucko of the Moose Hoose

  7. Hi Longrider

I’m sorry for the trouble caused to you.

To let you know, As of now we’re looking into this matter. But, nothing officially declared about it.

I appreciate your patience in this matter and please accept my sincere apologies for all the trouble caused.

    Regards

I’m not an unreasonable person, so I’ll give them some breathing space to consider their position.

  8. Not being an O2 subsciber or Sony customer, I’ve elected to go a bit further up the food chain. Have written to my UK MP and MEP’s demanding that all sponsoring ‘Carbon’ charities (Carbon Trust, ActionAid) receiving funding from UK and EU coffers are investigated and said cashflow withheld pending a full public enquiry.

I’m not holding out much hope, but it’s worth a try.

  9. Hi there, do you have links to a list of organisations who sponsored them? I saw one the other day somewhere, but I’ve gone an lost it, and I’m too lazy to find it myself!

  10. So these dickheads are now distancing themselves from a group which they knew nothing about when they handed them money? I think I’d be more impressed if they stuck to their guns.

  11. Hi there, do you have links to a list of organisations who sponsored them? I saw one the other day somewhere, but I’ve gone an lost it, and I’m too lazy to find it myself!

It’s on their website under “partners”. I’m too lazy to provide a link.
