In Which Paulie Apologises

Paulie of Never Trust a Hippie is not someone with whom I normally agree. Indeed, not so long ago, I found his comments regarding those of us who dislike the political classes infuriating.

All that said, credit where credit is due:

A few months ago, I described the MySociety campaign to force MPs to disclose their expenses as stupid and anti-democratic. And while this description could be read as praise if you squint, I don’t think that this is how it was taken.

An apology is in order. Reading it back over the events of the last few weeks, it’s very hard to maintain the position that I did then.

Kudos to him for changing his mind in the face of the evidence. I am not going to say “we told you so” as that would be churlish – and, indeed, even a hardened anti-political class cynic such as I, was unprepared for the sheer depth of cynical manipulation that has been exposed.

So, while I may disagree with Paulie’s politics and his general defence of the political class, I do admire his willingness to apologise when presented with the evidence that contradicted his original position.

Nadine Dorries’ Blog Taken Down

I don’t often find myself in agreement with Nadine Dorries, and I find her recent comments regarding MPs’ expenses somewhat disproportionate, but I do find allegations that her blog has been taken off-line at the behest of the Telegraph disturbing – very disturbing.

Clearly the Barclay brothers believe in freedom of speech for the Telegraph, but not those who presume to disagree with them, eh? The allegations made against them are hardly defamation – indeed, if as Dizzy says they are mere moonbattery, surely the appropriate response is to shrug it off. Suppressing it gives the allegation credence – and censorship by the powerful is something that we should always resist.

This, then, is a lesson to us all…

Host outside the UK. Perhaps Ms Dorries will take notice and shift to a host that has some balls; preferably one in the USA, such as this one is.

In the meantime, here is the cache for Nadine Dorries’ blog (and should that disappear too, I’ve secreted a copy for future reference).
